BETTER
FEED.

A harm-reduction extension that quietly drains the color out of Instagram and blurs the media — so you can scroll with intention, not on autopilot.

01 — What it does

Instagram, but quieter. No new feed, no algorithm, no shame — just three small switches that take the edge off.

Most of what makes Instagram hard to leave isn't the content — it's the saturation, the autoplay, the constant little visual hits. BETTERFEED turns those down. It runs in your browser, on the page, and never sees your data. You stay in control; the feed just stops trying so hard.

/ 01

Grayscale

Removes all color from the page. Stories, posts, chrome — every pixel. Color is the cheapest dopamine on the internet; this takes it off the menu.

/ 02

Blur media

Photos & videos render blurred until you click to reveal one, post by post. A tiny pause between you and the next image — usually enough to decide you didn't need it.

/ 03

No autoplay

Videos sit still until you press play. No motion in your peripheral vision, no Reels-shaped wormhole opening up while you were trying to check one message.

02 — Before / after

A typical post, with and without the lens on.

03 — The details

Small print, in plain language.

Where it runs
Locally, in your browser, only on instagram.com. Nothing is sent to a server. There is no server.
What it collects
Nothing. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking. Your toggle preferences live in chrome.storage.local and never leave the device. Read the privacy policy →
Permissions
Just the ability to inject CSS & a small script on instagram.com. That's it. No host permissions for any other site.
Open source
The whole extension is a few hundred lines of CSS and JS. You can read it, audit it, or fork it. Ask for the repo →
Cost
Free. Always. This isn't a startup — it's a small tool I wished existed.
